President Prabowo Subianto has made it clear that the Indonesian government carefully considered various factors before engaging in negotiations with the United States to reduce import tariffs from 32% to 19%. Prabowo stressed that the main priority during the discussions was to protect the interests of the Indonesian people, especially the nation’s workers.
“We have gone through all the necessary calculations and negotiations. What is most important to me is the well-being of our people. I am committed to safeguarding our workers,” Prabowo stated during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta.
Despite facing challenges, Prabowo mentioned that Indonesia maintained a strong position throughout the negotiations.
“We have taken a firm stance and presented our offer – we cannot make further concessions. However, ensuring the protection of our workers is paramount,” he emphasized.
The president also highlighted the resilience of Indonesia’s economy, noting its ability to withstand global uncertainties, including trade tensions.
“I am very optimistic about our economy. We are in a solid position and will remain steadfast regardless of the circumstances,” he added.
Regarding the tariff discussions with the U.S., Prabowo described the negotiations as tough but ultimately fruitful. Both sides acknowledged each other’s strategic interests, leading to a mutual understanding.
“We have recognized each other’s priorities, leading to a productive agreement,” he explained. “The tariff reduction from 32% to 19% was a result of continuous negotiations. I had to engage with President Trump, who is known to be a tough negotiator.”
President Trump had earlier announced the successful trade agreement with Indonesia, confirming the reduction of tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%.
