Prabowo Acknowledges Tough Talks with Trump on Tariffs

President Prabowo Subianto recently shared that he engaged in direct discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump concerning trade tariffs, describing the negotiations as challenging yet ultimately successful. “Thankfully, after tough negotiations, we were able to reach an agreement,” Prabowo stated at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta. He emphasized that both parties showed a mutual understanding of their respective national interests during the talks. As a result of the negotiations, the United States agreed to decrease import tariffs on Indonesian goods from 32% to 19%. “I persisted in negotiations—I must say, he is quite a tough negotiator,” Prabowo commented. The Indonesian government carefully strategized throughout the entire negotiation process, prioritizing the protection of public interests and domestic workers. “We analyzed the figures and negotiated every step of the way. My priority is the people. I have a responsibility to safeguard our workers,” Prabowo affirmed. He also expressed confidence in Indonesia’s economic strength amidst global uncertainties, stating, “I am highly optimistic. Our economy is robust and in good condition. Regardless of any challenges, we will remain resilient.” Prabowo further mentioned plans for a potential visit to the United States, hinting at a meeting with President Trump later this year, possibly around September or October. With a light-hearted tone, Prabowo joked about the possibility of playing golf with Trump, stating, “But I’m a bit nervous if he invites me for a round of golf.”
