Prabowo Grants Amnesty for Hasto and Tom: Fahri Hamzah’s Remark

President Prabowo Subianto recently granted amnesty and abolition to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto and businessman Tom Lembong, a move that has been praised for its wisdom and foresight in promoting national reconciliation. This decision was made in response to concerns over increasing societal divisions leading up to Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebrations. Senior politician Fahri Hamzah commended President Prabowo’s quick and thoughtful action, as well as House Speaker Prof. Sufmi Dasco Ahmad’s recognition of the need to end social polarization and kickstart a reconciliation process. The amnesty for 1,116 convicted individuals, including Hasto Kristiyanto, was approved by the Indonesian House of Representatives and reflects the President’s prerogative rights to eliminate legal consequences from criminal convictions. This move is seen as a significant step towards restoring societal harmony and reunifying the nation, especially amidst efforts by certain groups to sow division. President Prabowo’s exercise of constitutional power is viewed as a genuine effort to bring the nation back together in the face of fragmentation.
